The Washington Post: 'Lunch Among The Redwoods'

COMMENTARY:  It is interesting (to those interested in 'History') to note that William Howard Taft was in attendance at the Bohemian Grove, three years before his Presidential election in 1908.  Yet another President to add to the list, it seems that attending the Bohemian Grove can greatly improve your chances of 'getting to the top'.

Let's also not forget that President W.H. Taft was not only a 'Skull and Bonesman' ('tapped' in 1878) but was also the son of the one and only Alphonso Taft, a main founder member of the Skull and Bones Society.

LUNCH AMONG THE REDWOODS

************************************************

Secretary Taft, Miss Roosevelt and Party Have an Outing.

Special to The Washington Post

San Francisco, July 6. – The Taft party to-day visited the Bohemian grove of redwoods, near Guerneville, Sonoma County, as guests of President W.A.Foster, of the California Northeastern Railroad.  Miss Roosevelt appeared on the rear platform at all stations, greatly to the delight of the crowds that desired to get a glimpse of the President’s daughter.  On the train Luther Burbank met the party, and when introduced to Miss Roosevelt, she said: “I have heard so much about you, Mr Burbank.  They say you can do anything you like with plants.”

Luncheon was served at noon in the Bohemian grove. The tables were set in a circular dining-room at the large groves.  There were three circles of seats arranged about a fountain.  The decorations of the tables were in California fruits and ferns and the natural dining room was hidden by an immense circle of redwood saplings.  The entrance to the circle was formed with four redwood trees, two of eight feet and two more of eighteen feet, giving the pathway an avenue effect.  The tables were covered with green burlap to match verdure of the forest, and settees with wine-colored burlap.  The floor was strewn with redwood leaves.  The ice cream was served in the form of Owls, as a reminder of the patron bird of the Bohemian Club.  On the stage an orchestra played, and a chorus of thirty-five voices, located on the hillside, sang several songs.

To-night a big banquet was given to Secretary Taft by the Merchants’ Association.
