• Concept: Cognitive Dissonance - Leon Festinger formulated this theory "from a very general theory of 'cognitive dissonance'." (ibid., at p. 42) Festinger explored the psychological state that resulted when two cognitions were contradictory. By contradictory he meant that they "were either logically inconsistent or incompatible with the person's past experience. (ibid., at p. 190) Festinger believed that when there was inconsistency, or when there was conflict with the person's past experience, that this makes us uncomfortable enough that we'll take the simplest way out to get consistency again.

• America’s cognitive dissonance - Cognitive dissonance: writer James Atherton calls it “a psychological phenomenon which refers to the discomfort felt at a discrepancy between what you already know or believe, and new information or interpretation. It therefore occurs when there is a need to accommodate new ideas, and it may be necessary for it develop so that we become ‘open’ to them.” It’s that queasy feeling that rises often in your gut online and screams, “I DON’T BELIEVE THAT!”

• Dumbed Down Americans: Chattel for Global Tyranny - Education in America has done a fine job. “Despite nearly constant news coverage since the war there began in 2003, 63 percent of Americans aged 18 to 24 failed to correctly locate the country on a map of the Middle East. Seventy percent could not find Iran or Israel,” reports National Geographic. “Young Americans just don’t seem to have much interest in the world outside of the U.S.,” mused David Rutherford, a specialist in geography education at the National Geographic Society in Washington. Young Americans are so ill-educated, half of them can’t find New York on a map, let alone Iran and Iraq. “Many young Americans also lack basic map-reading skills…. Told they could escape an approaching hurricane by evacuating to the northwest, only two-thirds could indicate which way northwest is on a map.” But it is not simply geography.

• BIZARRE BUT IRONIC - 1,500 suicidal sheep leap of a cliff in Turkey: In the end, 450 dead animals lay on top of one another in a billowy white pile, the Aksam newspaper said. Those who jumped later were saved as the pile got higher, cushioning the fall. First one sheep jumped to its death. Then stunned Turkish shepherds, who had left the herd to graze while they had breakfast, watched as nearly 1,500 others followed, each leaping off the same cliff, Turkish media reported Friday.

• Half of U.S. Still Believes Iraq Had WMD: Do you believe in Iraqi "WMD"? Did Saddam Hussein's government have weapons of mass destruction in 2003? - Half of America apparently still thinks so, a new poll finds, and experts see a raft of reasons why: a drumbeat of voices from talk radio to die-hard bloggers to the Oval Office, a surprise headline here or there, a rallying around a partisan flag, and a growing need for people, in their own minds, to justify the war in Iraq. People tend to become "independent of reality" in these circumstances, says opinion analyst Steven Kull.
