CAMILLA Parker Bowles, the close friend of the Prince of Wales, will not face prosecution over an accident last month when she collided with a car driven by another woman, police said yesterday.

There had been speculation that Mrs Parker Bowles might be prosecuted for leaving the scene of the accident at Norton, Wilts. Wiltshire police said they had investigated the crash thoroughly but Carolyn Melville-Smith, the other driver, refused to make a complaint against Mrs Parker Bowles. The Crown Prosecution Service has decided that there was "insufficient evidence" to pursue a case.

Mrs Parker Bowles told police that she left the crash scene because as a security risk she needed to contact royal protection officers. She said her mobile phone did not work at the scene and she went to a nearby hilltop to get a better reception.

Miss Melville Smith, 53, an interior designer of Easton Grey, Wilts, said yesterday she felt sympathetic towards Mrs Parker Bowles after watching a recent television documentary about her.

She said: "It would be beastly of me to press charges. It would make life very difficult for her from what I have read and watched. I know it was not my fault, but on the other hand it takes two people to make an accident whoever is at fault. It is just what I say against what she says. There were no witnesses."
