• American firm in Bosnia sex trade row poised to win MoD contract - The American defence contractor forced to pay compensation to a UN police officer unfairly dismissed for reporting colleagues involved in the Bosnian sex trade is poised to be awarded its first contract by the British government, the Guardian has learned. DynCorp, which was ordered to pay the sacked UN investigator Kathryn Bolkovac £110,000 by an employment tribunal on Tuesday, is part of a consortium that is set to be awarded preferred bidder status by the Ministry of Defence to supply support services for military firing ranges. His sources indicate there are 23,720 abusers on the list - who are protected by the system.

• Portugal reeling over child sex abuse scandal - The senior socialist MP Paulo Pedroso, number two in the party and a former labour minister, was taken from parliament by police and held for investigation three weeks ago on 15 counts of suspected child-sex abuse. The abuse accusations centre on Casa Pia, an austere building in a leafy Lisbon neighbourhood, home to children without families, or with parents too poor to care for them. Claims that boys suffered decades of sexual abuse while the authorities did nothing has thrown Portugal into deep shock.

• Portugal's elite linked to paedophile ring: Abuse was reportedly going on at Lisbon orphanage for 20 years - A scandal over a paedophile ring run from a state orphanage gripped Portugal yesterday as it threatened to engulf diplomats, media personalities and senior politicians. Photographs of unnamed senior government officials with young boys from Lisbon's Casa Pia orphanage were among the evidence reportedly available to police after they arrested a former orphanage employee called Carlos Silvino. • Abuse claims 'against 26 priests' - Allegations of child sex abuse have been made against 26 priests serving in the Derry diocese over the past 50 years, the diocesan bishop has said. Dr Seamus Hegarty said there had been only one successful prosecution. It follows a report which found that 21 priests had abused children in County Wexford over the past 40 years. Bishop Hegarty investigated past and current child sex abuse allegations with the aid of an independent child welfare expert. He said they trawled back over 50 years, a period during which 330 priests served or are still serving in the Derry diocese.

• Bishop apologizes for delay in reporting alleged priest sex abuse - A Roman Catholic church official apologized Saturday for waiting several days to notify authorities about sexual abuse allegations against a priest, a delay that may have allowed the priest to flee to Mexico. Bishop Daniel Walsh of the Santa Rosa diocese said in a one-page statement to parishioners he put "caution" before "doing the right thing" in handling the allegations against priest Xavier Ochoa. Church officials say Ochoa admitted April 28 to sexually abusing a 12-year-old altar boy, but the allegations were not reported to Child Protective Services until May 1, and Ochoa disappeared the next day.

• Jewish Gangsters Raped, Killed Children As Young As 2 On Film: Italian and Russian Police Brake Up Child Snuff Porn Ring - Italian and Russian police, working together, broke up a ring of Jewish gangsters who had been involved in the manufacture of child rape and snuff pornography. Three Russian Jews and eight Italian Jews were arrested after police discovered they had been kidnapping non-Jewish children between the ages of two and five years old from Russian orphanges, raping the children, and then murdering them on film. • Nato force 'feeds Kosovo sex trade' - Western troops, policemen, and civilians are largely to blame for the rapid growth of the sex slavery industry in Kosovo over the past five years, a mushrooming trade in which hundreds of women, many of them under-age girls, are tortured, raped, abused and then criminalised, Amnesty International said yesterday. • Judge orders diocese to turn over records - A federal judge has ordered the Diocese of Scranton to disclose new information in a civil suit involving sexual abuse allegations against the Rev. Albert M. Liberatore. Father Liberatore pleaded guilty last year to nine criminal counts in two jurisdictions stemming from a sexual relationship he had with a then-teenaged altar boy while serving at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Duryea. The civil suit, filed a year ago, seeks damages against the diocese and several of its officials for allegedly failing to act once they learned of the abuse. Since the suit was filed, lawyers for the diocese and the victim - identified in court papers only as "John Doe" - have been tussling over how much information the diocese must provide about its knowledge of Father Liberatore's actions and his treatment by a psychologist.

• Child sex book given out at U.N. summit - A UNICEF-funded book being passed out at the United Nations Child Summit encourages children to engage in sexual activities with other minors and with homosexuals and animals. As the delegations to the summit remain deadlocked on abortion, international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that support the U.S. delegation's anti-abortion stance circulated copies of pages from a UNICEF-funded book given to delegates from Latin America that promotes sexual activity and abortion among teens in their countries.

• WOMAN SACKED FOR REVEALING UN LINKS WITH SEX TRADE - A DAMNING dossier sent by Kathryn Bolkovac to her employers, detailing UN workers' involvement in the sex trade in Bosnia, cost the American her job with the international police force. • UN ship 'carried child prostitutes' - The United Nations is investigating a report that a ship chartered for peacekeepers in East Timor is also being used to bring child prostitutes to the island nation, the organisation said today. The allegations surfaced over the weekend in the Portuguese weekly Expresso. The Expresso report said UN personnel were involved in bringing girls from Thailand to East Timor as prostitutes. "So far, some of the allegations are UNsubstantiated," said Hua Jiang, UN deputy spokeswoman. Andrew A. Burke, a pastor at St. Piux X in Pueblo, left the ministry around 1973 because of a "psycho-sexual behavior disorder," according to the lawsuit. Burke shot himself in the heart Sept. 21, coroner's officials said.

• Charges Shed Light On 'Gay' Cult: Tridentine Latin Rite `cult' is likely hiding members accused of sex abuse, police say - The shadowy history of an Eastside church, recognized by many as a cult, has come into focus with new charges of child molestation and an admission by one former member that he molested an 8-year-old boy. Steven A. Belzak told King County prosecutors that he began sexually abusing an 8-year-old boy at a home in Sammamish for male members of the Tridentine Latin Rite Church. In his confession, he said the abuse went on for three years, beginning in 2000.

• Brazilian priest sentenced to 14 years in prison for sexually two boys - A court in midwestern Brazil has sentenced a Roman Catholic priest to 14 years and eight months in prison for sexually molesting two boys, court officials said Wednesday. Rev. Tarcisio Tadeu Spricigo was convicted of molesting the boys, ages five and 13, between 2001 and 2002 in Anapolis, 600 miles (950 kilometers) northwest of Rio. Spricigo currently is jailed in Sao Paulo on similar charges. Spricigo has denied any wrongdoing, and his lawyers have pledged to appeal, the court's press officer Patricia Papini said by telephone from Goiania, the state capital. His conviction last Friday comes amid widening concerns of sexual abuse among Brazilian priests.

• 'Pastor' gets 3 life terms for sex with kids - The self-proclaimed pastor of the now-defunct Promise Land Church, Victor A. Icenogle, has been sentenced to three life terms in prison after he was convicted last week by a jury on three counts of sexual abuse of children. Icenogle, 49, was sentenced by Senior District Judge Pat Priest after a hearing in which prosecutors Catherine Hayes and Todd Winslow put on evidence of two prior convictions for the same crime in Florida.

• Ex-Minister held in child sex ring case - Portugal's spiralling paedophilia scandal has threatened to engulf the nation's elite after the arrest of a top politician and a warning from judges that the arrests of more MPs could be imminent. Socialist politicians have claimed they are part of a witch-hunt after the arrest of their official spokesman, Paulo Pedroso, on 15 charges of sexual abuse of minors following a phone-tapping operation by police. • Medina pastor charged with rape - A Medina pastor and father of 17 children is in jail Monday night charged with rape. Leonard Robertson was arrested for rape and gross sexual imposition for allegations involving two of his adopted children. Both were teenaged girls at the time of the alleged attacks. They are both now adults and out of the home. Investigators say the couple served as a foster family and adoptive family for many years and still have six kids living at home. The sheriff fears there are more victims out there.
